Golden Fleece

Return

The following was received from Eddie November 2013

In 1851 an (unnamed) public house is shown on Oldham Road two properties nearer to the town centre. It seems likely that this was the original position of the Golden Fleece. By 1892 the Golden Fleece is named on the map as the last property before the bridge. It has a narrow frontage to Oldham Road, with its front along the line of a walkthrough from Oldham Road to Moss Lane. It is still shown as a Public House (but not named) in 1910. The 1930 and 1958 maps do not mark the premise as being a Public House.

The Golden Fleece can (just) be seen in a photo dated 1926 on the following site -
